In her latest documentary, “What We Deserve,” Canadian filmmaker Shelley Jarrett sheds light on the long-standing issue of colonialism and the slave trade in relation to the British monarchy. The film, co-produced and written by Andrew Terry Pasieka, will be screened on February 18 at the Burlington Library and will be available for public release on Eventive on February 19th.
Jarrett, who is also a magazine publisher, woman’s advocate, and award-winning podcaster, is known for using her platforms to bring attention to social injustices around the world. In “What We Deserve,” she details the brutal history of the transatlantic slave trade and its impact on 10 million Africans who were taken from their homes and forced into slavery. The film puts these atrocities on full display, highlighting the importance of restorative justice and reparation.
As a respected member of the arts and business community, Jarrett was named to the 2022 list of 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women. She is an active member of several organizations, including the Art Gallery of Mississauga, the Canadian Centre for Women Empowerment in Ottawa, and the RPA Women Entrepreneur Award Committee.
In her own words, Jarrett says, “It is our responsibility to continue raising our voices and demanding societal change to address issues such as gender-based violence, systemic racism, and other social justice issues. Through education and awareness, we can push for meaningful change.” “What We Deserve” is a true testament to Jarrett’s commitment to bringing these important issues to the forefront.
