Winnipeg filmmaker, author, and professor Guy Maddin’s audacious 1988 horror/erotic/comedy-drama Tales From the Gimli Hospital begins a new life with a 4K restoration, 34 years after its initial release. Maddin’s signature silent and early film sound styles were set here in his first feature; Gimli defies genre definition as it swings across the history of film in ways that are moving and amusingly odd. Tales, starring Kyle McCulloch and Angela Heck takes place in the 1800s in a hospital in Gimli, Saskatchewan in the midst of a pandemic. What She Said’ Anne Brodie spoke with Maddin about the film’s new life.
