Let’s not forget…this is a great cause, and the BareNaked Ladies is just the cherry on the cake. When Betsy Budziak’s 2-year-old daughter Delfina needed a liver transplant, both she and her husband were tested as potential donors. Her husband wasn’t a match but Betsy was – except that doctors were concerned that nodules on her liver could become cancerous. She was ruled out as a donor which led to the family issuing a desperate public appeal for help. Since Betsy was still Delfina’s best hope for a transplant however, the transplant team at Toronto General decided to surgically remove the nodules. Once her liver healed, Betsy donated 20% of it to her daughter.
An estimated 1 in 4 Canadians may be affected by liver disease including children. Unfortunately, many forms of liver disease are not diagnosed until they reach an advanced stage meaning that one of the only options is a liver transplant. The Canadian Liver Foundation not only funds liver disease research but also transplant research in Toronto and across the country to help reduce the demand for transplants while at the same time improve the short and long-term success of the transplants themselves.
On November 4, 2016, Betsy and Delfina will be special guests at the Canadian Liver Foundation’s LIVERight Gala: Step Up to Save a Life, honouring the life saving work of transplant doctors from Toronto General Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children. The gala will be held at the Palais Royale and will feature a performance by seven-time Juno award winning recording artists Barenaked Ladies. Proceeds from this fundraiser will help support liver research.
