If you’re a woman over 40, you may be experiencing creeping weight gain, even though your eating habits haven’t changed and you’re exercising. Or perhaps, you’ve tried to eat less to combat the weight gain, but find it much harder to lose the weight now than ever before.
This is mainly because as we age, our resting metabolic rate slows down. On average after age 25, people lose 2-4% of their resting metabolic rate every 10 years. Most of us really feel the metabolic slowdown around age 35. It gets easier to gain fat and lose lean muscle. On average, between the ages of 25-65, people can lose about 5 pounds of lean mass per decade.
To add to the slowing metabolism, generally women in their 40’s experience falling estrogen levels as they move into perimenopause and menopause.
Hormone levels become more erratic. Blood sugar levels can spike and crash resulting in cravings, especially for high-carb sweets and junk food.
For many women over 40, this all culminates into weight gain that won’t budge! Yes, this is frustrating and can seem unfair.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. There is plenty that we can do to control our slowing metabolism, lose the weight and get lean and strong through making smart food, fitness and lifestyle choices. The even better news is that you can do this without deprivation or living in the gym!
