If you had to explain the sounds of “The 6ix” to the rest of the world in just 10 songs, playing 7Sould’s music would be the way. HOME TO YOU, 7Sould’s debut album, released in late July, is currently tracking in the top 10 on the charts across Canada. While the album has a single thread with a specific sound from start to finish, each track presents many different styles within.
“I can only think of a handful of cities in the world that come to mind just from hearing a song. Toronto is one of them,” says 7Sould Musical Director and Producer Joaquin Hidalgo. “The eclectic mix of cultural sounds on HOME TO YOU will have you feeling Toronto the whole time.”
As a unique musical project, 7Sould truly reflects the identity and cultural mosaic of Toronto. Merging history, heritage and modern sounds in a way that has never been heard before, the 12 musicians all come from different parts of the world. They represent a wide array of cultural backgrounds and fuse heritage to create a sound and experience that is decidedly different. With roots in Cuba, Jamaica, Korea, Philippines, India, Poland, Armenia and Quebec, the eclectic ensemble is heavily influenced by jazz, rock, funk, Latin and modern pop music.
Led by co-founders Joaquin Nunez Hidalgo (drums-percussion) and Mark Daniels (congas, percussion and Executive Producer), Mr. Hidalgo’s percussion work has earned him numerous awards and accolades, most notably in the 2008 Mirvish Production of the North American theatrical premiere of Dirty Dancing as well as performing on the official Dirty Dancing soundtrack. He has worked with such renowned artists as the Canadian Tenors and David Foster. Mr. Daniel’s love of music from a young age has led him to play with a variety of esteemed musicians and bands.
