Julie Garner and Jessica Henwick are Hannah and Liv, two Canadian travellers who are stranded in Australia when they run out of cash. They agree to take jobs at a remote outback inn after being warned about “male attention”. Things are okay for a while, but little by little, local rowdies ramp up their efforts to intimidate and challenge them. Writer-director Kitty Green’s feature pulse-pounder The Royal Hotel is smart, efficient and follows The Assistant, also starring Garner, and also concerns out-of-control male patriarchy and threat. What She Said’ Anne Brodie spoke with Green.
